It measures the thickness of the cornea in microns. The mean thickness tends to be around 550 microns, although there is significant variability. Its measurement is primarily used to determine whether we will have sufficient safety margins when performing LASIK surgery. A cornea that is thinner than normal may not withstand surgery well as the excimer laser may make it thinner still and reduce its strength.
